Christmas 2008 Round 1

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

Half way through and we have had to break a day early; I am finally succumbing to the flu germs and Eddie has reached critical excitement levels….

We started off by going to my sister Lucy and family for more panto fun with the Crankies on Tues 23rd. Lucy cooked a lovely meal for us all, and Eddie helped with the washing up

Then it was down to Cornwall and dinner with my boys and Dave’s girlfriend Nat on Christmas Eve

My sister Julie and husband Kaz kindly had us all for dinner on Christmas Day

We stopped off to see Helen and Millie in Dartington on the way back. Eddie had a great time playing with a 6 month old Bichon puppy called Shanty. She was a big girl, but Eddie held his own. Then exhausted we all headed back to the boat. Our apologies to Von and Liz for missing them today, but we will get down to Devon again soon.

Start of Christmas – Visitors for lunch

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

It was a mild, dry day here in Banbury and the sun even showed her face.
We were joined for lunch, by Chris and Rhona and their two boys Corrick and Dylan.

Eddie joined in too, and the boys kindly swung his tuggy toy on a rope for him to chase. Then we went to the park for football and swings (though Eddie had to go in his playpen for a rest).

Christmas cards – with help

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Eddie is a helpful chap, here he is assisting me with the Christmas cards.

It seemed to take twice as long as usual though, and he left me to lick the stamps. Do your dogs like Christmas?

Steady Eddie has arrived

Well here is the boy. I managed to catch him when he stood still for a sec….see his lttle harness. He is so cute.
Paul and I drove over to Denise and Chris to pick up Eddie this morning. The weather was awful, pouring with rain. Paul felt awful as he had ‘man flu’ but kindly came with me to do the directions.
We spent a wonderful couple of hours with Dee and Chris having puppy therapy. Here is Paul with a little chap who may need a home in mid Jan 09 – what do you think?

And here is Chris with two tiny girl puppies, with Eddie looking on, waiting for a chance to play.

Thanks for a lovely day Dee and Chris, and for entrusting your little Steady Eddie with us.

A touch of snow

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

It has been really cold here. Berlin was warmer (just back from 3 days over there at a conference). We have even had some snow, though just a dusting and all gone by 11.00am.

The wild birds now coming to the food hung in a tree near the boat are demolishing everything And to think I used to worry that they hadn’t found the food. For any interested birdwatchers out there, we have a gang of long tailed tits that descend 3 times a day regularly. At least 8 sometimes 10 attive at 10 past 11 each morning. Fabulous to watch.

A puppy for Christmas

Friday, December 12th, 2008

I know they say you shouldn’t get a puppy at Christmas time but….at a meeting in London the other day I was offered the chance to have a 12 week old puppy for a few weeks over the holidays to provide new things for him to see as part of his preparation for learning to be a “diabetic alert and response dog”.

Well I couldn’t say no, could I?

Paul and I are going to meet Denise Hayes tomorrow to collect little “Eddie”.
Denise breeds Affenpinschers (monkey terriers), and they are small, black scruffy, live wires with bags of personality. Here is a picture of Denise’s first ever Affen, Maisie, still going strong. “She has a lot to answer for!” says Denise

I am so excited!!

Dusty, our boaty coalman, has just rung to see if we would like to give a home to “Little Legs” a 9 year old Corgi x Jack Russel. The owner’s new job means that the dog will be left alone for long periods of time. We will have a look and see what we can do….but only after Eddie has gone back. More news and lots of photos soon.
(This blog seems to be going in a number of directions….boaty stuff in the summer, dogs and wildlife all year, and then we have the family and friends stuff too. Should we try to organise this?)

Ice on the water…

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

First ice on the water this morning, feels like winter has really arrived in south east. Earlier snow showers just didn’t count for a lad brought up in the lakes. Takes me back to last Dec when we set off for few weeks cruise to Kinver and spent a week breaking ice to get there. Apart from needing blacking this year, it was an enjoyable trip, cold days but no wind meant it was pleasant cruising.

I want to ask the question whether others think it is “polite” to cruise when the canal is frozen. We had some complaints and one person said we’d sink his boat (because the ice gets pushed against his “steel” hull). I know the noise is quite loud when you’re inside the boat, so can understand there may be some objection. Are we moving to a time when cruising outside social hours and times of teh year becomes frowned upon by a section of the boating community.
