The wind got up at 1.30am. The boat started banging around and woke us up. That was it really for the rest of the night. Un-daunted there was a lull at 7.30 in the morning, so raring to go Nik encouraged us to make a start.
Up three locks, with Gemma soon getting the hang of the steering. The weather was quite nice, sun shine and almost no wind. We were delayed at Seend Top Lock. A boat had broken free of its moorings and blocked the top gate. We sorted that out then it was on to the first of two swing bridges.
The wind was beginning to pick up again, and the sky turned grey so we thought we had probably pushed our luck for the day. A short cruise further on
And we moored up by another pub, about a mile from the bottom of the Devizes flight of 21 locks – 16 closely grouped. Once we started the flight we were committed to going right to the top. There was no way we could make it today so we resigned ourselves to more 6 X and another meal in the pub. Lots of friends for Nik and Gemma’s dog Tye (a merle rough collie)…….Insert 3612
