Trip to the South West

January 7th, 2010

I needed to see the boys. It had been so long since seeing Daniel and David in particular and Christmas had made things worse, so Paul and I dashed down to Devon last Monday to see them, after dropping Charlie off with my sister Lu.

Dinner in Exeter with the boys and Holly

Dinner in Exeter with the boys and Holly

We met up in Exeter and went for a meal. Dave had brought his new girlfriend Holly to meet us – it must be serious then! A lovely young woman, I thought she held her own very well with the boys when the banter grew more lively. Dave and Holly left soon after we had eaten as theyhad to drive down to Cornwall and the forecast wesn’t good. Dan and Nick came back to the Hotel and we had a drink in the bar.

Nick, my youngest son stayed with us until 1.45am as he was getting the coach from Exeter to Heathrow, to catch a plane to Miami the following morning. He was going to meet a young woman he met through Facebook. You can imagine all the scare stories his brothers told him!

Charlie and Ellie

Charlie and Ellie

Ellie and Charlie

Donna called round with Ellie to play. The two dogs really like each other and Ellie has just finished her first season. Both Donna and I feel that Charlie and Ellie would have made lovely puppies together, but its too late now! Charlie has had the snip and Ellie goes to be spayed soon.
They had a great game of “terrier wrestling” on the boat and generally wrecked the place. Charlie has gone to sleep for the afternoon!

Dog Walking and Pet Sitting news

December 3rd, 2009

I have just updated my webpage about RBC Pet Care Services, which can be found here

http://danieloakley.org.uk/?page_id=750

Any of you boaters wishing to get away without boat and pets, just call round and moor up in Banbury. I can look after the pets, keep the fire going, and run the engine each day to keep the batteries charged up!

Happy boating.

Charlie gets top marks

Charlie looking pleased with himself

Charlie took his Kennel Club Good Citizen Bronze and Silver tests last Sunday and I am really pleased to be able to tell you that he passed.

The weather conditions were awful. It was a wet and cold day and I was doubtful that he would do even a 1 minute stay, one of the tests in the Bronze Award. However he was perfect, a very good stand stay for the Bronze (he didn’t even move a paw) and a 2 minute sit stay for the Silver. A really great effort (and no pressure on me as one of the dog trainers at the club!)

Have a look at the Kennel Club link to find out more about the tests.
I think they are a good idea, as they are aimed at the average pet owner and provide a starter curriculum and a focus for training. They are pretty basic but allow progression and give us all something to aim for.

A new venture

October 9th, 2009

As I have a new dog – Charlie, who keeps me out of doors most of the time, I thought I had better look at how I can earn some money. Gem suggested I look at dog walking and now here we are.

Welcome to RBC Pet Care Services and my new grey van for transporting dogs and any other pets if necessary. I have 3 customers already and I havent even promoted the service yet!

If you are in the Banbury and surrounding area and want to get away from home and pets, give me a call as I can offer pet sitting, dog walking and pet taxi services. If you are on a boat and hoping to get away before Christmas, you need to get between Cropredy and Aynho before the stoppages, and be prepared to spend 6 weeks in the area – then I can help with the dogs and cats.

I have spoken to a couple of well established dog walkers in Banbury (I am told there are 60 providers out there), and they have given me lots of tips and advice. Gem and Nic who have their own disco business have also helped with good advice on marketing and pricing etc.

Atalanta

September 20th, 2009

Atalanta has spent the last few weeks in Brinklow getting a new rudder and rails from Rex Wain. We’re hoping to head off mid week to go and tow her back.

I note it is cutweb rally weekend, but we won’t have time for detour, but we;ll see how it goes. If anyone is around Napton Saturday (not sure when) we’d welcome a hand up the locks. 🙂

If you’re boating the South Oxford over the weekend, say hello and thanks for you patience if you end up behind us. We had a good trip towing Atalanta to Brinklow and manged it in 2 1/2 days from Banbury. Thanks to everyone we met for their interest and assistance, allowing is to work both boats through the locks in series.  And to the couple of boaters (out of many) who complained about us moving a butty on the canals slowing them down, keep off the canals this weekend.

More news soon I hope as Karen finds more time to update the blog with some photos.

Underfloor investigations

September 20th, 2009

We have had a slight list for a few weeks. This followed the discovery of a leak from the kitchen tap and a few weeks later Charlies managed to knock the kitchen sink tap one and flood the work top. So I though it was maybe time to check under the floor.

Three holes later and using an oil extraction pump, I had removed 4 gallons of water from under bedroom floor.  The holes are next to heating pipes from the eberspacher so hopefully the bottom will dry out quite quickly.

Charlie settles in

August 5th, 2009

What a little poppet. I cannot believe what a great dog he is. We have always had rescued dogs and they have always come with problems, but he seems too good to be true. He is great with people, children, other dogs, good in the car, toilet trained…..why did he end up as a stray? He has been loved, I hope I dont meet his previous owners!

Here are some piccies of him settling into life on the arm..

Welcome to little Charlie

August 5th, 2009

Well here he is at last – our new dog – and a “right Charlie” he is. It has been hell without a dog (Paul will tell you how miserable I have been) but after losing 3 last year it seemed to take me a while to recover, ready to have my heart broken all over again.

Charlie

Charlie

He was a bit of a handful when we brought him home from Ardley Kennels last Thursday at 4pm. Totally stressed and confused – mouthing our hands and feet, humping my cushions and climbing onto and over everything!

The next morning I put a long line on his collar and we used this to encourage him off the sofa and to control him when he got carried away with the biting.

But he is so clver and sweet. He loves his cuddles and being brushed. He has learned to jump from the sofa into his bed, to sit, lie down and stand, to roll-over and we are almost there with the “bang you’re dead” trick.
